How to play Pandemic?

Game Setup

  • The board represents a network of interconnected cities around the world.
  • Each player receives a role from several specialists, such as the Medic, the Scientist, the Dispatcher, or the Operations Expert. Each has a unique ability that heavily influences the collective strategy. The initial infections are then placed in different cities before the game begins.

Gameplay outline

  • In turn, each player has four actions to advance the mission.
  • They can move between cities, treat infection outbreaks, build research centers, or exchange cards with their teammates to prepare for discovering cures.
  • After each turn, new cities are contaminated by Infection cards. Regularly, an Epidemic card accelerates the spread of diseases, increases the rate of infections, and can cause dangerous chain reactions called outbreaks. An outbreak contaminates all neighboring cities and can trigger others, quickly making the situation critical.
  • The richness of Pandemic lies in team coordination. Players must constantly weigh containing existing outbreaks, preparing to discover cures, and anticipating upcoming disasters.

Win/Loss Condition

  • Players collectively win the game as soon as the four cures are discovered.
  • Conversely, the team immediately loses if eight outbreaks occur, if the cubes of a disease run out, or if the player draw pile is entirely exhausted before the four cures are discovered.
