2 players 30 min 8 years and up

In Patchwork, two players compete to create the most beautiful patchwork on a 9x9 board by judiciously choosing their fabric pieces.

You must manage your time and buttons to assemble a harmonious, gap-free blanket. But be careful not to advance too quickly on the timer, at the risk of losing your turn! The player with the most complete and aesthetically pleasing patchwork scores the most points.

This special edition celebrates the 10th anniversary of this classic two-player game.

How to play Patchwork?

Game Setup

Gameplay outline

  • In turn, a player chooses one of the three fabric patches located in front of the neutral pawn or decides to pass.
  • To acquire a patch, they must pay its cost in buttons then advance their marker on the Time track according to the value indicated on that patch. They then place it on their quilt, trying to minimize empty spaces.
  • Unlike many games, players do not play alternately. It is always the player whose marker is furthest behind on the Time track who plays. It is therefore common for the same player to take several consecutive turns if they choose small, inexpensive patches in terms of time.
  • As the game progresses, certain spaces on the track allow players to collect additional buttons, while the first players to reach certain locations win small leather squares intended to fill holes in their quilt.
  • The entire strategy consists of finding the best balance between efficiently filling one's board, keeping enough buttons to buy the most interesting patches, and intelligently managing one's progression on the Time track.

Win/Loss Condition

  • The game ends when both players reach the last space on the time track.
  • Each player then adds up the buttons they still have and subtracts two points for each empty space remaining on their quilt. The player with the highest final score wins the game. A bonus is also awarded to the first player to completely fill a 7 × 7 gridon their board.
  • Don't just look at the big pieces

Minor pieces are often essential to avoid endgame penalties.

  • Handle your buttons with care

Being too much of a spendthrift can prevent you from seizing an excellent opportunity a few turns later.

  • Follow the Time lead

Playing several turns in a row is sometimes more profitable than immediately buying the most attractive piece.
