Patchwork and Patchwork Express are two board games for two players, designed by the renowned author of Agricola. These accessible and clever strategy games invite you to create the most harmonious patchwork possible on a personal board. In Patchwork, the board is 9x9 squares, while in Patchwork Express, which is faster and simpler, it is 7x7 squares.
In turn, players choose a fabric block from three available options. Once the block is selected, it must be placed on their board respecting the shape constraints, without overlapping already placed blocks. Every decision counts to optimize space and accumulate buttons, the game's currency.
The goal is to create the most complete blanket possible. At the end of the game, the player with the most buttons and the fewest holes in their blanket wins.
Patchwork Express is a faster and more accessible version, ideal for children or for short games between adults. These two board games for two players are perfect for fans of strategy, logic, and tile placement.
How to play Patchwork Express?
Game Setup
- Each player receives a personal 7 × 7 quilt board, five buttons, and a time token.
- The patch pieces are arranged around the time track. Unlike classic Patchwork, only colored patches are available at the start of the game. Blue patches, specially designed to easily fill remaining spaces, only appear during the second half of the game. This new feature makes it easier to build an almost complete quilt.
Gameplay outline
- In turn, a player chooses one of the three pieces available in front of the neutral pawn or decides to advance on the Time track to collect buttons.
- Each piece has a button cost and a time cost. After purchase, it is placed on the personal quilt, trying to make the best use of the available space.
- As in the original game, the player furthest back on the Time track always plays first. This mechanic creates a very particular rhythm where the same player can sometimes take several consecutive turns.
- The main difference from Patchwork lies in its more accessible approach: the pieces are larger, their shapes are less complex, and the famous blue piecesappear at the end of the game to help fill the last empty spaces. Optimization is still present, but decisions are more intuitive and mistakes are less penalizing.
Win/Loss Condition
- The game ends when both players reach the end of the Time track.
- Each player adds up the buttons they still possess, then subtracts points for any empty spaces remaining on their quilt.
- The player with the highest score wins the game. Unlike Patchwork, the bonus for the 7 × 7area is removed, as the entire quilt is already that size.
