How to play Cockroach Poker?

Game Setup

  • The 64 cards are shuffled and dealt among all players.
  • Each player keeps their hand secret. The cards represent eight different types of critters, each present in multiple copies. The objective will be to avoid collecting four identical cards in front of you.

Gameplay outline

  • In turn, a player chooses a card from their hand and places it face down in front of an opponent.
  • They then announce the name of an animal, which does not necessarily correspond to the card played. The targeted player must decide whether they think this announcement is true or false.
  • If they immediately accept the card, they announce "true" or "false," then flip it over. If their intuition is correct, the player who offered the card keeps it in front of them. Otherwise, they take the card face up.
  • But there is a second possibility: instead of answering, the player can secretly look at the card and then pass it to another player. They then choose whether to confirm the previous announcement or invent a new identity for the card. The card can thus circulate between several players before the last one is forced to decide.
  • This mechanic transforms each card into a veritable time bomb where lies, half-truths, and psychology quickly take precedence over chance.

Win/Loss Condition

  • Unlike most games, there isn't actually a winner.
  • The game ends as soon as a player has four identical cards face up in front of them or when they have to play but have no cards left in their hand.
  • This player immediately loses the game, while all others are declared winners.
