How to play Popcorn?
Game Setup
- Each player receives their Cinema board, their bag containing the initial spectators, and their starting resources.
- The Film cards are placed in the common market, the different movie theaters are prepared, and the end-game rewards are revealed. The famous advertising station is also set up to allow players to attract new visitors throughout the game.
Gameplay outline
- A game takes place over nine rounds, each divided into three phases.
- During the first phase, players buy new films for their cinemas, build new cinemas, or invest in advertising to attract more viewers to their bag.
- Then comes the cinema screening. All players play simultaneously by drawing spectators from their bag before seating them in their cinemas. Placement is essential: matching the right color of spectator to the right seat and the right genre of film can trigger particularly powerful bonuses. Money, new visitors, upgrades, or valuable popcorn then follow one another through increasingly effective combinations.
- But success doesn't last forever.
- At the end of each round, films gradually lose popularity. Their effects are masked over the turns, forcing players to regularly refresh their programming to remain competitive. This mechanic perfectly reproduces the lifecycle of a blockbuster in cinema and encourages constant strategy adaptation.
Win/Loss Condition
- After the ninth round, players count all their popcorn.
- Additional points are awarded for Reward cards, trophies won, and remaining resources.
- The director who has collected the most popcorn wins the game and becomes the most prestigious cinema in the city.
