Players take turns placing a marble on the board, choosing from 3 options: adding one of the 15 available marbles; moving an already played marble up one level; or forming a square of their color to retrieve 2 of their marbles. The winner is the first to place a marble of their color at the very top of the pyramid.

How to play Pylos Mini?
Game Setup
- The board is placed in the center of the table, and each player receives their 15 marblesof their chosen color.
- The game begins with an empty base. Players collectively build the pyramid by progressively placing their marbles on the different levels.
Gameplay outline
In turn, a player performs one of two actions:
- place a new marble from their reserve onto the board;
- move an already placed marble to a higher level, provided the building rules allow it.
To place a marble on an upper level, it must rest on four marbles forming a perfect square. This mechanic rewards players who can anticipate several turns in advance.
When a player completes a square of four marbles of their color or a complete line on the same level, they can retrieve one or two of their already played marbles and return them to their reserve. This rule is the strategic core of the game: conserving one's marbles is often as important as building the pyramid.
As the game progresses, the possibilities diminish, and each decision becomes crucial. Should one accelerate construction towards the top or intentionally slow down one's opponent? The right balance between offense and defense makes all the difference.
Win/Loss Condition
There are two ways to win the game:
- be the player who places the marble at the top of the pyramid;
- or force your opponent to use up all the marbles in their reserve before you do.
Good resource management is therefore as important as your progress towards the top.
Our Tips for Winning
-
Save your marbles
Regularly aim to form squares to collect marbles. A well-stocked reserve will give you more options at the end of the game.
-
Think several moves ahead
Each marble placed influences future possibilities, both for you and for your opponent.
-
Use the arrow keys
Moving a marble to a higher floor often saves a new marble while speeding up your progress.
FAQ – All about Pylos
What is the purpose of Pylos?
Build the pyramid by placing your marble at the top before your opponent, or manage your marbles more efficiently so that they exhaust their supply first.
What makes Pylos original?
Unlike many abstract games, it's not enough to simply place your pieces well: you also need to manage your supply of marbles. Recovering marbles adds a true optimization dimension.
Does chance play a role in the game?
No. Pylos is an abstract strategy game with no element of chance. Victory depends solely on the decisions of the two players.
Why choose Pylos?
Because it's one of the great abstract strategy classics. Accessible from the very first games, it gradually reveals impressive tactical depth. Its quality wooden components, elegant rules, and quick games make it an excellent choice for all lovers of thoughtful play.
