Quarto is one of the great classics of abstract strategy games for two players. Awarded numerous times around the world, it stands out for a mechanic as simple as it is brilliant: you never choose the piece you play, your opponent dictates it to you. Your mission is then to place this piece in the best spot to create an alignment of four pieces sharing a common characteristic. Between anticipation, logic, and risk-taking, Quarto offers fast, elegant, and incredibly tactically deep games.

How to play Quarto?

Game Setup

  • The game board is placed in the center of the table and the 16 wooden piecesare arranged next to it.
  • Each piece is unique and has four characteristics: tall or short, round or square, light or dark, solid or hollow. No pieces are assigned to a player.

Gameplay outline

  • The first player chooses a piece from the sixteen available… but does not play it.
  • They give it to their opponent, who is forced to place it on an empty square on the board. The opponent then chooses a new piece and, in turn, hands it to their adversary.
  • The richness of Quarto lies in this unique mechanic: one must constantly find the best spot for an imposed piece, while selecting a piece that offers the fewest possible opportunities to the opponent.
  • As the game progresses, the board gradually fills up. Each new piece can contribute to several different alignments, forcing players to simultaneously analyze the four characteristics of all pieces in play.

Win/Loss Condition

  • A player immediately wins the game when they make a line of four pieces sharing at least one common characteristic.
  • This line can be horizontal, vertical, or diagonal. For example, the four pieces can all be tall, all round, all light, or all hollow.
  • The player must announce "Quarto!"as soon as they make this line to validate their victory.
  • Think about the room as much as its position

Placement is important, but the real challenge is choosing a piece that will not give your opponent an immediate win.

  • Analyze the four characteristics

Don't just focus on colors or shapes. Alignments can also be based on size or whether the pieces are solid or hollow.

  • Avoid double threats

A single piece can sometimes allow for multiple different alignments. Try to never provide such an opportunity.

FAQ – All about Quarto

What is the purpose of Quarto?

Create an alignment of four pieces sharing at least one common characteristic, while working with the pieces chosen by your opponent.

What makes Quarto unique?

Unlike most strategy games, you never choose which piece you will play. This role reversal creates a particularly original level of thought.

Does chance play a role in the game?

No. Like the best abstract strategy games, Quarto involves no element of chance. Only players' decisions determine the outcome of the game.

Why choose Quarto?

Because it is one of the most original abstract games ever created. Its principle of having your opponent choose your pieces completely renews the classic alignment mechanics. With its high-quality wooden components, elegant rules, and strategic depth, Quarto has become an essential reference in two-player puzzle games.
