Quoridor is one of the great classics of abstract strategy games for two or four players. Its principle is as simple as it is ingenious: be the first to reach the opposite side of the board. But your opponents can slow your progress by placing barriers to create a real labyrinth. Between racing, anticipation, and blocking, every decision counts. Easy to learn but particularly rich in tactical depth, Quoridor has become an essential reference in puzzle games.

How to play Quoridor?
Game Setup
- The board is placed in the center of the table.
- Each player places their pawn in the middle of their starting line and receives their fences. With two players, each has 10 fences; with four players, each participant receives 5.
Gameplay outline
In turn, a player chooses one of two possible actions:
- move their pawn one square horizontally or vertically;
- or place a barrier to slow down their opponents' progress.
Barriers can be placed horizontally or vertically between the squares on the board. They gradually alter the players' path, creating a real maze.
However, an essential rule applies:there must always be at least one path for each player to reach their finish line. It is therefore forbidden to completely trap an opponent.
The richness of the game lies in the balance between progression and defense. Should you advance quickly towards your goal or invest in an extra barrier to lengthen your opponent's journey? Each wall placed has a lasting influence on the game and forces players to constantly re-evaluate the shortest path.
Win/Loss Condition
- The first player to reach the opposite lineof the board with their pawn immediately wins the game.
- No point system is involved: only the race to the exit matters.
Our Tips for Winning
-
Don't put up your guard too soon
Keep a few for the decisive moments of the game, when their impact will be greatest.
-
Always keep an eye on the shortest path
Each wall alters movement possibilities. Regularly reassess your path and that of your opponent.
-
Control the center of the board
The middle generally offers more options to adapt your trajectory depending on the obstacles.
FAQ – All about Quoridor
What is the objective of Quoridor?
Be the first player to move your pawn to the opposite side of the board while using your fences to slow down your opponents.
Is it possible to completely block an opponent?
No. The rules require that there always be at least one path allowing each player to reach their objective. This constraint is what makes barrier placement particularly strategic.
Is chance involved in the game?
No. Quoridor is an abstract strategy game with no random elements. Victory depends solely on your ability to anticipate moves and use your fences at the right time.
Why choose Quoridor?
