How to play Qwirkle?

Game Setup

  • Shuffle all the tiles and place six face down in front of each player.
  • The remaining tiles form a central draw pile.
  • Determine the first player randomly.

Gameplay outline

  • In turn, a player places one or more tiles from their hand onto the table, either adding them to existing lines or starting new ones.
  • A line must respect only one of the following two characteristics: same shape with all different colors, or same color with all different shapes.
  • After playing, the player draws to once again have six tiles in hand.
  • The turn passes to the next player.

Win/Loss Condition

  • The game ends when the draw pile is emptyand a player has placed all their tiles, or when no player can place any more tiles.
  • Then, the points are counted: each tile placed gives one point, and a "Qwirkle" (six tiles in a complete line) earns a bonus.
  • The player with the highest total scorewins the game.

  • Anticipate potential Qwirkles

    Be careful of the lines approaching the six tiles and anticipate them to collect the bonus before the opponent blocks the line.

  • Keep your options open

    Avoid focusing on a single line. Diversify your placements so you don't get stuck due to a lack of compatible tiles.

  • Block the opponent's lines

    If you see that your opponent is close to achieving a Qwirkle, play a tile that blocks them or diverts the line to slow down their progress.
