Res Arcana is an expert card game in which powerful mages compete to become the King of Arcana. By manipulating five magical essences, you summon creatures, create mysterious artifacts, take control of ancient monuments and places of power to build the most efficient game engine. With only eight Artifact cards per player, every decision is crucial. How to play Res Arcana?
Game Setup
- Each player chooses a Mage, receives a Magic Item, one essence of each type, and a personal deck of 8 Artifact cards. Three of these eight cards form the starting hand.
- Monuments and Places of Power are placed in the center of the table to be available throughout the game.
Gameplay outline
- A game is played over several rounds.
- At the start of each round, players simultaneously collect essences produced by their cards and various game elements.
- They then take turns performing a single action: playing an Artifact, activating a card's power, acquiring a Monument, conquering a Place of Power, or discarding a card to gain additional essences.
- As the game progresses, your production engine becomes increasingly efficient. Artifacts combine, Dragons enhance your power, and Places of Power offer particularly potent abilities. The richness of Res Arcana lies in optimizing these synergies with a deliberately limited number of cards.
- When a player decides to pass, they can no longer perform actions during that round, but they are already preparing for the next. Finding the right moment to stop is often as important as the actions performed.
Win/Loss Condition
- At the end of each round, a victory check is performed.
- If one or more players have 10 or more Victory Points, the game ends immediately. Points primarily come from Monuments, Places of Power, certain Artifacts, and the First Player tile.
- The player with the most points wins the game and becomes the Arcane King.
