How to play Risk?

Game Setup

  • The board representing the different continents is placed in the center of the table.
  • Each player chooses a color and receives their army. Territories are distributed among the participants, then each player deploys their first troops.
  • Depending on the chosen mode, players also receive a secret missionto accomplish or play with the classic objective of world domination.

Gameplay outline

  • On their turn, a player always follows the same steps.
  • They begin by receiving reinforcements based on the number of territories they control, to which bonuses for fully conquered continents may be added.
  • They can then launch as many attacks as they wish against neighboring territories. Battles are resolved using dice: the attacker and defender roll their dice, then compare the results to determine which armies are eliminated.
  • When a territory is conquered, the player moves some of their troops into it before potentially continuing their offensive. Finally, they can reposition certain units to prepare their defense for the next turn.
  • The entire strategy of Risk lies in finding the right balance between rapid expansion and consolidating one's positions. An overly ambitious attack can leave a continent defenseless, while an overly cautious strategy risks allowing opponents to gain the upper hand.

Win/Loss Condition

  • Victory conditions depend on the chosen game mode.
  • In the classic version, the winner is the first player to complete their Secret Missionor eliminate all opponents according to the selected rules.
  • Each game requires adapting to the objectives and decisions of other players, which constantly renews possible strategies.
