| 2 to 6 players | 15 min | Ages 8+ |
Ritual is a cooperative real-time game with limited communication for 2 to 6 players, designed by Tomás Tarragón and published by Palladis Games. In an enchanting shamanic universe, players must collectively perform a sacred 6-step ritual — but without uttering a single word or making any gesture. Only your actions speak for you. A unique, intense experience of connection and intuition, lasting only 15 to 20 minutes, which caused a sensation when it was presented at the Cannes International Games Festival.

How to play Ritual?
Game Setup
- Distribute to each player a mystic plan(personal mini-board) and 4 elemental gemsof random colors.
- Draw one secret Inspiration cardfor each player: it describes the combination of gems to gather to awaken.
- Place the Ritual cardsnext to the central board according to the round: 1 ritual in round 1, 2 in round 2, 3 in round 3.
- Set up the gem reservein the center of the table.
- Start the timer— or the official app for an immersive musical atmosphere.
Gameplay outline
The game is played in 3 timed rounds. On your turn, you perform 1 action out of 7, in silence and without gesturing:
- Take a gemfrom the player to your left.
- Give a gemto any shaman.
- Place a gemon your mystic plane (indicating it's not suitable for you).
- Retrieve a gemfrom your mystic plane.
- Swapa gem from the reserve for a gem on another player's mystic plane.
- Achieve your Inspirationif you have the correct combination of gems, then consult the next secret ritual.
- Passyour turn.
After each action, you pass the totemto the next player. A round ends when all Inspirations and all Rituals for the round are completed within the allotted time.
Win/Loss Condition
Collective Victory: The team wins the game if they successfully complete all 3 rounds with their respective rituals before the timer runs out.
Collective Defeat: If time expires before all steps of a round are completed, the entire group loses. Restart or take on the challenge at a higher level.
Our Tips for Winning
-
Learn to read your teammates' mystical blueprints
The mystic boardis your only tool for silent expression. A gem placed on it clearly signals "I don't want it." Observe your teammates' boards each turn to understand their needs without them having to speak.
-
Always prioritize Inspirations over Rituals
Secret Ritualsare only unlocked after Inspirations. Quickly ensuring your personal combinations clears the way for collective steps. A player who lags on their Inspiration slows down the entire group.
-
Be consistent in your actions to become legible
Without words, your teammates learn to "read" you over the rounds. If you always act the same wayto signal a specific need, they get used to it and anticipate. The consistency of your patterns is better than improvisation.
FAQ – Everything you need to know about Ritual
Can we truly communicate solely through our actions, without frustration?
Yes, and that's the magic of the game. The mechanics are so well designed that players eventually understand each other without words. The first few games can be disorienting, but frustration quickly gives way to a rare feeling of connection around a table.
Is there an official app and is it essential?
An application exists that offers immersive ambient musicand a built-in timer. It's not essential – a simple timer will do – but it significantly enhances the shamanic atmosphere and the group's immersion.
Is the game suitable for players who don't like timed pressure?
The time limit is at the heart of Ritual's tension. For players who are sensitive to stress, it's possible to slightly extend the timerduring the first few games to get used to the mechanics. The key is to find a group rhythm before tackling the high difficulty levels.
Does Ritual work well with 2 players?
The game works with 2 players, but the experience is optimal with 4 players. With 2, gem combinations are simpler, but the margin for error is reduced. With 4, the richness of silent interactions reaches its full potential and collective rituals become true coordination challenges.
