Root is an asymmetrical strategy game in which players will compete to take control of the forest.
Each faction has its own rules, making the game very deep. The Marquise de Cat seeks to industrialize the forest, the Eyrie Dynasties want to rebuild their empire to face their sworn enemies the cats, the Woodland Alliance wants to spark a popular uprising, and finally the Vagabond completes their own quests and forms alliances by taking advantage of opportunities that arise.
Includes the first expansion featuring the Riverfolk Company, sharp-toothed merchants who sell their services to the highest bidder, and the Lizard Cult, a dark sect seeking to convert the inhabitants of the undergrowth to their cause.

How to play Root?
Game Setup
- The forest board is placed in the center of the table.
- Each player chooses a faction. Each faction has its own board, pawns, buildings, cards, and most importantly, its own rules of operation.
- The cards are shuffled, the factions set up according to their setup order, and the game can begin.
Gameplay outline
- Each player takes their turn by following the different phases specific to their faction.
- All use the same basic principles: move, fight, craft items, or manage cards. However, each people has very different objectives.
- The Marquise de Catbuilds buildings and develops her economic network. The Eyrie Dynastiesplan their actions using a programming system that can lead to real crises if their orders become impossible to execute. The Woodland Alliancespreads sympathy among the inhabitants before triggering an insurrection. As for the Vagabond, they freely roam the forest, complete quests, trade with certain factions, or intervene in conflicts according to their own interests.
- This asymmetry is what makes Root so rich. Players must not only master their own faction but also understand how their opponents work in order to anticipate their actions and prevent one of them from gaining a decisive lead.
Win/Loss Condition
- Two conditions allow you to win the game.
- The most common is to be the first player to reach 30 victory points.
- It is also possible to win with a Domination card, which replaces the point objective with a specific territorial control condition.
- Each faction scores its points according to its own mechanics, which forces all players to constantly monitor their opponents' progress.
Our Tips for Winning
-
Master your faction above all else
Each nation functions almost like a different game. Take the time to understand its strengths, limitations, and objectives.
-
Watch the leader
In Root, a player can accelerate very quickly. It is often necessary for several opponents to temporarily cooperate to slow down the leader.
-
Anticipate adversary capabilities
Knowing the mechanics of other factions is almost as important as mastering your own.
