How to play with the Underworld expansion?
Game Setup
- Root: Underworld Expansionrequires the Root base gameto play.
- Before the game, players can choose to embody one of the two new factions or integrate them with existing factions. The expansion also adds two new double-sided boards: the Mountain Mapand the Lake Map, each with specific rules that influence movement and territory control.
Gameplay outline
- The fundamental rules of Root remain unchanged, but the new factions offer very different playstyles.
- The Underground Duchyrelies on a unique political organization. Players recruit ministers who progressively unlock new actions and strengthen their military power throughout the game. This faction rewards meticulous management of its development.
- The Corvid Conspiracy, on the other hand, favors trickery and disinformation. Its warriors scatter face-down tokens on the board, forcing opponents to guess whether they are traps, bombs, or other schemes. This mechanic creates strong psychological tension and pushes other players to take risks.
- The two new boards also modify strategies. The Mountain map introduces a blocked passage that can be opened during the game, while the Lake map allows players to use a ferry to quickly cross certain forest areas. These novelties significantly change movement and confrontations.
Win/Loss Condition
- As in the base game, the first player to reach 30 victory pointswins the game.
- It is also possible to win using a Domination card, which replaces the point objective with a specific territorial control condition.
- The new factions have their own methods for accumulating points, which renews strategies without changing the victory conditions.
Our Tips for Winning
-
Make the most of your faction
Underworld Duchy and Corvid Conspiracy each demand a very different approach. Take the time to master their mechanics before trying to optimize your strategy.
-
Use the new trays
Mountain and Lake cards offer new movement opportunities. Anticipate these access points to surprise your opponents.
-
Pressure the Corvids
If a player controls the Corvid Conspiracy, don't let their plots accumulate without a reaction. The longer they remain in play, the more dangerous they become.
