Saboteur is a bluffing and hidden role card game that has won over millions of players thanks to its mix of cooperation, betrayal, and strategy. In a mine filled with tunnels, players secretly embody gold diggers or saboteurs. The former try to build a tunnel to the treasure, while the latter seek to slow down their efforts without revealing their true identity. Between Path cards, Action cards, dirty tricks, and accusations, every game is full of suspense. How to play Saboteur?
Game Setup
- At the beginning of each round, each player secretly receives a Rolecard indicating whether they are a gold diggeror a saboteur. The Path, Action, and Gold cards are prepared, then the Start card is placed face-up with the three Goal cards, only one of which hides the true gold nugget.
- Each player receives a hand of cards and the game can begin.
Gameplay outline
- In turn, a player chooses one of three actions: playing a Path cardto extend the tunnels, playing an Action cardto help or hinder a player, or discarding a card before drawing a new one.
- The gold diggers cooperate to reach the treasure, but they don't know who their true allies are. The saboteurs, on the other hand, try to block progress by breaking other players' tools, causing rockfalls, or building dead-end paths, all while trying not to arouse suspicion.
- A round ends when the treasure is reached or when all players have run out of cards. Roles are then redistributed and a new round begins. A full game consists of three rounds, allowing everyone to play different roles throughout the game.
Win/Loss Condition
- At the end of each round, the gold miners win Gold cardsif they have managed to connect the start to the treasure. Otherwise, the saboteurs collect the rewards.
- After three rounds, players count their gold nuggets. The player with the greatest wealth wins the game, regardless of their role during the different rounds.
