Sea Salt & Paper is a family-friendly card game that is as elegant as it is clever, in which you gradually create your own marine world. On your turn, collect cards, build collections, and form duos to trigger their effects. But the subtlety of the game lies in when you decide to end the round: stop immediately to secure your points or give your opponents one last turn, betting on your lead? With its accessible rules, quick games, and magnificent illustrations made from origami, Sea Salt & Paper combines collection, combos, and risk-taking in a small, particularly addictive format.

How to play Sea Salt & Paper?

Game Setup

  • The cards are shuffled to form a draw pile placed in the center of the table.
  • Two cards are then revealed to form two distinct discard piles. Players will progressively pick up cards into their hand to form collections and create different combinations.
  • The game can then begin.

Gameplay outline

  • On your turn, you must start by drawing a card.
  • You can either take the top two cards from the draw pile, keep one in your hand and place the other in a discard pile, or directly take the top visible card from one of the two discard piles.
  • You can then play certain pairs of cards to activate their effects.
  • For example, Crabsallow you to search a discard pile, Boatsoffer an extra turn, Fishallow you to draw a card from the draw pile, while Swimmers and Sharksallow you to steal a card from an opponent.
  • The other cards are mainly used to form collections that will score points at the end of the round.
  • As soon as you have at least 7 points in your hand, you can decide to end the round.
  • Two options are then available to you.
  • By announcing STOP, the round immediately ends, and each player scores the points in their hand.
  • You can also announce LAST CHANCE. The other players then each have one last turn to try to beat you.
  • If, after these last turns, you still have the best score, your risk-taking is rewarded. Otherwise, your opponents benefit from your failed gamble.
  • This push-your-luck mechanic is one of the most important elements of Sea Salt & Paper and creates permanent tension around the table.

Win/Loss Condition

The game is played over several rounds.

Players progressively accumulate points through their collections, cards, and various effects.

The game ends when a player reaches or exceeds the point threshold corresponding to the number of participants:

  • 40 points for 2 players;
  • 35 points for 3 players;
  • 30 points for 4 players.

The player with the highest number of points then wins the game.

An immediate victory is also possible thanks to the four Mermaids: successfully collecting all four in your hand allows you to win the game directly.

  • Watch the discards

The visible cards provide valuable information about the available possibilities. They can also reveal what your opponents are trying to collect.

  • Use your duos at the right time

Effect cards can create particularly effective combos. An extra turn or a card retrieved at the right time can completely change your round.

  • Dare to take a calculated risk

This option can offer significant rewards, but it also gives all your opponents one last turn. Use it when you believe you have a sufficiently comfortable lead.

FAQ – All about Sea Salt & Paper

What is the objective of Sea Salt & Paper?

The goal is to collect marine cards, create combinations, and trigger the end of rounds at the optimal moment to accumulate more points than your opponents.

What are card duos for?

Some cards can be played in pairs to trigger special abilities: playing again immediately, retrieving a specific card, or even stealing a card from an opponent. Making good use of these effects is essential to optimize your hand.

Is Sea Salt & Paper suitable for colorblind players?

Yes. The game uses the ColorADD system, which associates symbols with colors to make them easier for colorblind players to identify.

Why choose Sea Salt & Paper?

Because it manages to offer many decisions with very few rules. Collecting good cards, triggering combos, observing opponents, and above all, choosing the ideal moment to end the round make each game different. Its small format, games lasting around 30 minutes, and superb artistic direction make it an excellent card game for two players, or with family and friends.
