With Extra Pepper, new event cards shake up the rules of Sea Salt & Paper. In each round, a card modifies the game conditions: bonuses, penalties, different objectives… Nothing is set in stone! Shells worth 2 points, winning with 3 mermaids, spying on an opponent's hand… there are many strategic surprises.
At the end of the round, the event card remains in play for the leading or trailing player, depending on its symbol, influencing the next round.

How to play with the Extra Pepper expansion?

Game Setup

  • Extra Pepper nécessite obligatoirement le jeu de base Sea Salt & Paper et ne peut pas être joué indépendamment.
  • Préparez Sea Salt & Paper normalement, puis mélangez séparément les 12 cartes Événement de l'extension afin de constituer une nouvelle pioche.
  • Au début de chaque manche, la première carte Événement est révélée. Son effet devient alors une règle commune que tous les joueurs devront prendre en compte pendant la manche.

Gameplay outline

The main rules of Sea Salt & Paper remain the same: you collect cards, form sets, make pairs, and try to determine the best time to end the round.

The big new feature comes from the Event cards.

Each one temporarily modifies a part of the rules. Some influence the placement of pairs or the management of your hand, while others modify how points are scored or the conditions required to achieve certain objectives.

For example, you might encounter an event that allows Shells to be worth 2 points, another that allows you to win with only 3 Mermaids instead of 4, or an effect that lets you look at an opponent's hand.

You must therefore adapt your strategy to each new round instead of systematically applying the same methods.

How do Event cards work?

At the end of a round, points are counted normally.

The Event card used during that round is then awarded to a player based on the symbol it displays.

A card with a +symbol is awarded to the player with the highest total score, while a card with a -symbol goes to the player with the lowest score.

In the next round, a new Event card is revealed and applies to everyone. The player who collected the previous card benefits from its personal effect in addition to the common event.

This mechanic can create particularly original situations, with several rules simultaneously modifying the way the game is played.

Win/Loss Condition

  • Extra Pepper does not replace Sea Salt & Paper's general victory conditions.
  • Players continue to accumulate points over the rounds until they reach the threshold to trigger the end of the game.
  • However, some Event cards can temporarily modify important rules and create new opportunities. Therefore, you will need to carefully monitor the current event before deciding whether to take risks or end a round.
