But military power alone will not suffice: dice determine your deployment possibilities, while Tactic cards can completely turn the tide of a confrontation. Accessible while offering genuine strategic choices, Sengoku provides fast-paced and tense battles where positioning, anticipation, and risk-taking might allow you to unify Japan under your banner.

How to play Sengoku: Warring Provinces?

Game Setup

  • The board, representing the different provinces of Japan, is set up in the center of the table.
  • Each player chooses their faction and collects the components corresponding to their army. The necessary pawns and cards are then prepared before proceeding with the initial deployment.
  • The objective will be to gradually strengthen your presence in the provinces to take control of castles and surpass the other Daimyos.

Gameplay outline

The game primarily alternates between deploying armiesand resolving clashes.

During the deployment phase, players take turns rolling their three dice. The result determines how many Army tokens can be placed in the indicated province.

Then, you must decide how best to utilize these reinforcements. You can consolidate an important position, prepare an offensive, or try to contest a province occupied by an opponent.

When multiple armies seek to take control of the same territory, a battle breaks out.

The forces present then clash to determine who will retain the province and its precious castle.

How do Tactic cards work?

The Tactic cardsallow you to modify the course of confrontations and are one of Sengoku's main strategic elements.

Used at the right moment, they can reinforce an army, change an unfavorable situation, or surprise an opponent who thought they had a sufficiently strong position.

Since their number is limited, it is important not to waste them in secondary clashes.

A decisive battle for control of a castle can be much more important than a simple skirmish between two provinces.

Win/Loss Condition

  • Your objective is to take control of the castles scattered throughout Japan.
  • As the game progresses, armies move, power dynamics shift, and players attempt to assert their dominance over the different provinces.
  • Victory goes to the Daimyo who best exploited their troops, dice rolls, and Tactics cards to achieve the dominant position at the end of the game.
  • Do not scatter all your armies

Controlling many territories is beneficial, but positions that are too weak become easy targets. Consolidate your important provinces before continuing your expansion.

  • Monitor the 11 castles

Not all territories have the same importance. Always remember that controlling castles is at the heart of the struggle for victory.

  • Save your Tactics cards for important battles

A powerful card used in a secondary skirmish might be missed when you need to defend a key position.

FAQ – All About Sengoku: Provinces at War

What is the goal of Sengoku: Provinces at War?

You play as a Daimyo seeking to expand your influence across Japan. You must deploy your armies, win battles, and seize control of castles to assert your dominance.

Is chance important?

Dice play an important role in deploying armies, but they don't solely determine the winner. Your choice of territories, troop distribution, and use of Tactic cards can greatly influence the game's outcome.

Is this an expert strategy game?

Sengoku offers real tactical choices, but remains more accessible and faster than an expert grand conquest game. Its 30-minute games allow you to enjoy a territory control experience without having to spend several hours on a single game.

Why choose Sengoku: Provinces at War?

Because it condenses the sensations of a game of conquest and territory controlinto fast and accessible games. The dice create uncertainty, the Tactic cards allow for comebacks, and the 11 castles constantly push players to confront each other. With its feudal Japan theme and numerous wooden armies, Sengoku is an excellent choice for discovering conquest games or enjoying strategic confrontations without endless matches.
