How to play with the Skull King expansion?

Game Setup

  • Shuffle the 12 new numbered cardsinto the base game deck.
  • Integrate the 7 new special cards: Mary Throne, Plank Punishment, The Last Salvo, The Spotted Ray, and the other expansion cards.
  • Distribute the 3 player aid cardsto quickly explain the new powers.
  • The 4 blank cardsincluded allow you to customize your own house rules.
  • The rest of the setup follows the usual Skull King rules exactly.

Gameplay outline

  • The game unfolds as usual over 10 rounds, with an additional card progressively dealt each round.
  • The new cards naturally integrate into the tricks: Mary Throneplays like a classic pirate, but if she wins a trick, her player draws a random card from an opponent's hand and must play it in the next trick.
  • The Plank Walkforces an opponent to skip an entire trick. The Last Salvomultiplies your winnings. The Spotted Rayand other cards add unprecedented strategic variables to each turn.
  • With 9 players, each round deals up to a maximum of 10 cards per player, intensifying the complexity and interactions.

Win/Loss Condition

Unchanged: after 10 rounds, the player with the highest scorewins. Successful bet = +20 points per trick. Failed bet = -10 points per trick difference. The expansion's special cards offer new bonuses and penalties that can turn everything around at the end of the game.

  • Tame Mary Throne before integrating her

  • Reserve the Plank for decisive folds

The Plankis a surgical weapon: its impact is greatest when it deprives an opponent of a trick they needed to make their bid. Save it for the later rounds, where every trick counts the most.

  • Anticipate new cards in your bets

The expansion increases the number of special cards in play. This means that tricks are more unpredictablethan with the base game. Slightly temper your ambitions for the first few games and bet more cautiously as you get acclimated.

Is the base game required to use this expansion?

Yes, the expansion is not standalone. It requires the Skull King base game, sold separately.

How many cards are in the expansion?

The box contains 12 color cards, 7 new special cards, 3 player aid cards, and 4 customizable blank cards, for a total of 26 cards.

No. The 3 player aid cardsillustrate each new power with clear visual symbols. New players can refer to them throughout the game without interrupting gameplay.
