How to play Skyjo?

Game Setup

  • Deal 12 cardsto each player, face down.
  • In front of each player, create a 4-column × 3-row gridwith these 12 cards, still face down.
  • Form the draw pile with the remaining cards and place the first card from the draw pile face up in the center to create the discard pile.
  • Each player turns over two cardsof their choice in their grid.
  • The player with the highest sumfrom their two revealed cards starts.

Gameplay outline

On each turn, a player has two options:

  1. Take the visible card from the discard pile
They exchange it with one of their own cards, hidden or visible.
The exchanged card is placed face up on the discard pile.
  2. Draw from the draw pile (face down card)
They can keep it: in this case, they exchange it with one of their own cards (visible or not), then discard the replaced card face up.
Or refuse it: they place it directly on the discard pile, then must turn over one of their cards that is still face down.

A special rule: if a player manages to reveal three identical cards in the same column, they can discard all three of them.

The round ends when a player has all their cards revealed. At this point, the other players play one last round to prepare for scoring.

Win/Loss Condition

  • Once the round ends, each player reveals their remaining hidden cards.
  • Points are calculated by adding the values of all visible cards.
  • If the player who revealed everything does not have the lowest score, their positive score is doubledas a penalty.
  • Several rounds are played: the game ends as soon as a player reaches or exceeds 100 points.
  • The winner is the one with the lowest total score.
  • Focus on high-value cards

Try to replace your high cards (e.g. 10, 11, 12) with lower or negative cards as soon as possible to limit your final score.

  • Look for identical columns

Locate the columns where you could reveal three identical cards: this allows you to discard them completely and significantly reduce your points.

  • Use the discard pile wisely

Taking the visible card from the discard pile can be very profitable if it is a low card. But beware: the exchange could force you to reveal a stronger card. Always weigh the potential gain against the risk.
