Nominated for the Golden Ace in 2024 🏅
| 2 to 5 players | 25 min | 8 years and up |
Embark aboard the famous HMS Beagle and follow in the footsteps of the most famous naturalist. In this flagship title from our selection of family board games, you will travel the world to list species and write your travel diary. It's a collection game as fluid as 7 Wonders, ideal for learning draft mechanics.

How to Play On the Origin of Species?
Game Setup
Place the central board representing the Beagle's journey in the middle of the table and arrange the Animal and Character tiles on the grid. Each player receives their own Naturalist's Notebook board. The Beagle miniature begins its journey on its starting position along the selection grid.
Gameplay outline
In your turn, you choose one of the three tiles facing the Beagle figurine. Once the tile is placed on your notebook (respecting the class and continent), move the Beagle a number of spaces equal to the distance of the tile taken. If you are looking for similar but faster placement mechanics, take a look at Draftosaurus.
Win/Loss Condition
The game ends when each notebook contains 12 tiles. The final score depends on the animals, characters, published theories, and compasses collected. The player with the most victory points becomes Darwin's worthy successor.
Our Tips for Winning
-
Prioritize theory publications
As soon as you complete a row or a column, you get a Theory tile. These multipliers are the key to success, much like the objectives found in some strategy games. Make choices that allow you to validate these objectives as early as possible.
-
Manage ship placement
Don't just look at your board: observe where you're sending the Beagle so you don't offer a crucial tile to your opponent. Tempo control is essential, a skill you can perfect by consulting ournew releases and gaming gems.
-
The Importance of Guide Tokens
Guide tokens allow you to move the Beagle one space or refresh the tile river. Keep them carefully for the last turns of the game so as not to get stuck, a resource management that recalls the tension of the best management games.
