The Anarchy is a demanding strategy game that plunges you into 12th-century England, at the heart of the civil war opposing the supporters of King Stephen and those of Empress Matilda. At the head of a fortified domain, you will have to develop your city, strengthen your castle, recruit military forces, and anticipate increasingly threatening attacks. An ambitious blend of resource management, planning, and territorial defense, The Anarchy offers a deep strategic experience where every decision influences your ability to survive until the end of the conflict.

How to play The Anarchy?
Game Setup
- Each player receives their personal sheets representing their castle and domain, as well as a set of starting resources. The central board is set up with the round cards, objectives, and elements related to future attacks.
- Before the game begins, a scenario is chosen. Several modes are available to vary the challenges and modify certain strategic constraints.
Gameplay outline
- A game of The Anarchy takes place over five successive rounds. In each round, players gather resources, recruit specialized workers, then invest their means in developing their territory.
- Resources are used to improve various aspects of your kingdom: building defenses, developing your city, strengthening your economy, or advancing your military capabilities. Several types of workers are involved in these choices, creating a true optimization puzzle.
- But growth alone is not enough. At the end of each round, attacks threaten your castle. Some information is visible in advance, while other information remains partial, forcing players to prepare their defenses while continuing to develop their economic engine. This permanent tension forms the strategic core of the game.
Win/Loss Condition
- After five rounds, players tally their points earned through influence, loyalty, military power, objectives, and achievements.
- Successful defenses and the ability to maintain a balance between development and security play a major role in the final score. The player who has built the most prosperous and best-protected kingdom wins.
Our Tips for Winning
-
Build your defenses sooner rather than later
Waiting for the arrival of major attacks is often a mistake. Investing gradually in your castle allows you to better absorb mid-game pressure.
-
Develop your economy before accelerating your expansion
A stable economic engine facilitates all future choices and avoids resource bottlenecks during the final rounds.
-
Always maintain a degree of flexibility
Some information about the attacks remains incomplete. Keeping some resources or workers available allows you to correct your plan at the right time.
FAQ – All about The Anarchy
Why is The Anarchy considered an expert game?
The game combines resource management, optimization, threat anticipation, and engine building in a dense structure that requires real planning.
Is the game more about management or defense?
The two dimensions are inseparable. Developing one's domain without preparing one's castle exposes one to significant losses.
Are the attacks entirely predictable?
No, some of the information is deliberately hidden to create constant tension in your development choices.
Do storylines actually change games?
Yes, the different scenarios modify the constraints and provide high replayability.
