How to play with the Artifacts expansion?

Game Setup

  • Shuffle the 28 new Creature cardsinto the base game deck.
  • Place the 11 Artifact tileswithin reach of all players.
  • Deal each player an Artifact token, the Shelter tokens, and the arena extensions.
  • Set up the cardboard caveand the new double-sided player aids.
  • The rest of the setup follows the usual rules of the base game.

Gameplay outline

  • At the beginning of each round, during the hunting phase, twice as many creatures as usual are revealed.
  • Before choosing a creature, each player selects an artifactby placing their marker on it. The same artifact cannot be chosen as in the previous round.
  • The chosen artifact grants an active power for the round: Host(host an additional creature), Shelter(protect a creature from certain effects), or other offensive or defensive bonuses.
  • The rest of the round proceeds according to the classic rules of the base game, with the effects of the artifacts integrating naturally into existing combos.

Win/Loss Condition

The endgame now triggers when a player reaches 80 points(up from 60 in the base game). The player with the highest score wins.

  • Plan your artifact before choosing your creature

The artifact and creature form a tactical duo. Select your artifact in anticipation of the creature you want to draft this turn. A Homecoming artifact combined with a creature with a powerful enter-the-battlefield effect can create devastating synergies.

  • Do not underestimate Shelter in the face of adverse effects

In 3-4 player games, interactions between creatures multiply. The Shelterability allows you to protect your key cards from your opponents' negative effects. Keep it in reserve for turns when your combo engine is most vulnerable.

  • Vary your artifacts to keep the opponent guessing

The rule that prevents you from taking the sameartifact from the previous turnforces you to vary your strategies. Use this to your advantage by making your gameplay unpredictable: if you always chain the same artifacts, your opponents will learn to anticipate your combos.

FAQ – All you need to know about The Vale of Eternity Artifacts expansion

Is the expansion difficult to integrate into the base game?

No, it's one of its greatest strengths. The new rules — artifacts, Home, and Shelter — integrate without disrupting the fluidity of the base game. A quick read of the booklet is enough to start an enriched game that very evening.

Can the expansion be played from the first game of The Vale of Eternity?

It is highly recommended that you master the base game firstbefore adding Artifacts. The mechanics of the original game are already rich: Artifacts amplifies them, it doesn't replace them. One or two games of the base game is a good starting point.

Are the 28 new Creature cards very different from those in the base game?

Yes. The new creatures incorporate effects designed to interact with artifacts, which creates new combos impossible in the base game. They also provide welcome variety for players who have already extensively explored the original deck.

Is the expansion compatible with other The Vale of Eternity expansions?

Artifacts is the first expansion in the line. A second expansion, Curse, is also available and adds Summoners and a curse system. Both expansions are designed to be combined.
