| 3 to 8 players | 20 min | 10 years and up |
Dive into the ruthless world of pirates with Traitors Aboard, a party game combining bluffing, strategy, and hidden identities. Each player embodies a loyal pirate or a hidden mutineer, and must maneuver to serve their own interests. The heart of the game lies in exchanges, fragile alliances... and betrayal! In just 20 to 30 minutes, exhilarating twists and turns can surprise every participant.

How to play the game?
Game Setup
- Deal each player a "role" card(Pirate or Mutineer), which remains secret.
- Depending on the number of players, adjust the total number of mutineers (e.g., 1 mutineer for 3-5 players, 2 mutineers for 6+).
- Shuffle the "Loot" cards and "Action" cards, then deal 3 cards to each player. The rest form the draw pile.
- Prepare two play areas: one for the treasure chest, where loot cards will be placed, and one for the discard pile.
Gameplay outline
- In turn, each player chooses a card from their hand and places it face downin the chest. They announce a value (real or not) – bluffing is highly encouraged.
- Instead of a chest card, a player can play an Actioncard to influence the game: force a discard, trigger a vote, etc.
- Players discuss, question, and debate freely to determine who might be a mutineer. Alliances form, but mistrust lingers.
- This repeats until the cards run out or until a side meets its victory condition (see below).
Win/Loss Condition
- Pirate Victory: The treasure chest reaches or exceeds the target value set according to the number of players. Otherwise, if all mutineers are spotted and ejected (symbolically) – Pirate victory.
- Mutineer Victory: Mutineers win either by keeping the treasure chest below the target, or by sowing enough confusion to get Pirate players ejected.
Our Tips for Winning
-
To bluff convincingly
Assigning a random value to the cards placed in the chest is a powerful weapon. If you are a mutineer, announcing high values like a pirate can sow doubt. If you are a pirate, minimizing your announcements can help you avoid suspicion too early.
-
Use Action cards wisely
Don't waste your Action cards as soon as you can. Use them to force a discard or trigger a vote when it creates the most chaos, or when you have a possible ally. A well-timed action can turn the game around.
-
Observe others' reactions
Observe behavior: who hesitates, who talks a lot, who is silent? These clues are invaluable. Mutineers often try to gain trust, while loyal pirates are generally more transparent (or appear to be so).
FAQ – All about Traitors on Board
Is Betrayal at House on the Hill strategic or purely based on bluffing?
Both! There's a very strong bluffing aspect, but decisions on how to use Action cards, when to play cards, or when to trigger a vote require strategy.
Is the game easily replayable?
Yes. Each game changes thanks to hidden roles, drawn cards, and shifting alliances. The human factor (discussion, bluffing) guarantees high replayability.
What is the recommended minimum age to play?
From 10 years old, according to the publisher, making it accessible to families without sacrificing the depth of the game.
What is the ideal number of players to maximize the experience?
The game works well with 3 players or more, but according to user feedback, it can be particularly dynamic with 5–8 players, as betrayal becomes more intense.
