How to play Uno?

Game Setup

  • Shuffle the cards then deal a starting hand to each player. The rest of the deck is placed in the center to form the draw pile, and a first card is flipped over to start the discard pile.
  • Each player starts with the same objective: be the first to get rid of all their cards.

Gameplay outline

  • In turn, players must play a card that matches either the color, the number, or the symbol of the card visible on the central pile.
  • If no move is possible, a new card must be drawn. Certain special cards can completely change the pace of the game: making players draw extra cards, skipping a turn, reversing the direction of play, or changing the active color.
  • The most famous moment comes when a player has only one card left: they must announce "UNO" before an opponent notices. Forgetting this announcement can result in a penalty and completely restart the round.
  • The mix of anticipation, timing, and special cards means that no two games ever play out exactly the same way.

Win/Loss Condition

  • The round ends as soon as a player plays their last card.
  • Depending on the chosen mode, the other players then count the points corresponding to the cards they still hold in their hand. Several rounds can be played to reach the target score defined at the beginning of the game.
