How to play Zenith?

Game Setup

  • Place the Planets boardin the center of the table, with the 5 planet pawns positioned in the middle of their tracks.
  • Place the Technology boardand the Diplomacy boardwithin reach of both sides.
  • Deal the starting Credit tokensand Zenithium tokensto each player.
  • Shuffle the 90 Agent cardsand deal a starting hand of 4 cardsto each player.
  • Place the Leader Badge tokenand designate the first player.

Gameplay outline

In each turn, the active player plays a cardfrom their hand and chooses from 3 possible actions:

  • Gain influenceon a planet of the card's color, applying its effects.
  • Advance on a technology treeto unlock lasting bonuses.
  • Take Leadership, which grants additional resources and an extra card in hand.

After playing, the player replenishes their hand to 4 cards(or 5-6 if they hold the Leader badge).

The turn then passes to the opponent. No complex deck management: the pace is fast and fluid.

Win/Loss Condition

The player (or team) who meets one of these conditions wins:

  • 3 influence tokens on the same planet
  • 4 tokens on 4 different planets
  • 5 tokens distributed across any planets
  • Don't sacrifice your cards without considering their triple use

Each card can be played in three different ways. Before using it for its main effect, ask yourself if gaining credits or advancing on technologywouldn't be more beneficial this turn. The best decisions often come from calculated sacrifice.

  • Invest early in tech trees

Technological bonusesaccumulate over turns and create a formidable snowball effect. A player who neglects this area will quickly fall behind in resources, even if they maintain good influence tracks.

  • Monitor the Leader badge at all times

The Leader Badge tokengrants an additional card in hand each turn. This is a subtle yet decisive advantage over the long term. Don't let your opponent keep it for too long without reacting.

FAQ – All about Zenith

Is Zenith really a two-player game first and foremost?

Yes. Although it can also be played by 4 players in teams of 2, it is in a 1-on-1 duelthat Zenith reveals its full depth. The tension is maximal, every card played is immediately perceptible by the opponent, and the tug-of-war dynamic takes on its full meaning.

Is it quick to get started with despite the many icons?

The first few minutes can be disorienting due to the density of icons on the cards. But the player aid provided in the box is effective, and after one or two rounds, the game becomes very smooth. Practicing online on Board Game Arena is also an excellent way to learn without pressure.

Does Zenith have extensions?

Yes. A first expansion titled Secret Agentswas released in autumn 2025. It takes the form of a booster pack of new Agent cards with brand new characters, further enriching the variety of games.

Does a bad start doom the game?

No, and that's one of the game's great qualities. The reversals of fortuneare frequent and often spectacular. A lost lead can be caught up in two or three well-played turns.
