How to play Carcassonne?

Game Setup

  • Mix all the landscape tiles and place one face up to start the game.
  • Players each choose a color and take the corresponding meeple tokens.
  • Place one token from each player on the score marker.
  • Place the face-down tile draw pile within reach of everyone.

Gameplay outline

  • Each turn, a player draws a tile and places it on the table according to the rules: roads connect to roads, cities to cities, fields to fields.
  • After placing their tile, the player may place one of their meeples on one of the elements of the played tile (road, city, monastery, or field)ifthat area is not already occupied by another player's meeple.
  • If an element is fully completed by placing this tile (e.g., a city fully enclosed, a road closed, a monastery completely surrounded, etc.), then points for that element are immediately scored, and the meeple concerned is returned.
  • The game continues until all tiles have been placed or the draw pile is empty.

Win/Loss Condition

The game ends when the last tile is placed. The final score is then calculated, including unfinished areas and especially farmers in fields, which can overturn the score. The player with the most points wins. For those who enjoy this type of area control, feel free to explore our strategy games.

Our Tips for Winning

  • Don't waste your Meeples

    This is the classic beginner's mistake: placing your 7 followers too quickly on areas that are difficult to close. If you no longer have any Meeples in reserve, you will not be able to score points on immediate small opportunities. Manage your stock with the same caution as your resources in Galèrapagos.

  • Master the art of "Squatte"

    You cannot place a Meeple on an already occupied structure, but you can place an adjacent tile and try to connect two structures later to share, or even steal, the points from a large opposing city. This subtle interaction is reminiscent of the tension in Room 25 Ultimate.

  • Watch out for the peasants

    Farmers remain on the board until the end of the game and score a lot of points depending on the number of completed cities bordering their fields. Don't neglect them at the end of the game, as they often make the difference between a good player and a Carcassonne master.
