Does the multi-award-winning Codenames really need an introduction? It's THE game you absolutely must have at home, perfect for all situations, regardless of the age of the participants. It's a word association game for two teams. Objective: find all the words before the opposing team!
On their turn, the spy of a team must make their teammates guess one or more words by giving them a clue and a number corresponding to how many words can be guessed with that clue.
The guessing players then point to the words they think they should guess, one by one, hoping not to pick a word from the opposing team, or the forbidden word, which would mean instant defeat! A totally addictive and essential game!

Codenames: Game Rules
Game Setup
- Place 25 Word cards in the center of the table (5 x 5).
- Each team chooses a spymaster; the other players become field operatives.
- The spymaster draws a Key card indicating which cards belong to their team.
Gameplay outline
- The spymaster gives a single clue(one word) and a numberindicating how many cards relate to that clue.
- The agents discuss, interpret, and point to the corresponding cards.
- If the revealed card belongs to their team, they continue; otherwise, the turn passes to the opponent.
- Some cards hide the assassin: if it is pointed to, the game ends immediately.
Win/Loss Condition
The team that identifies all its agentsbefore the other wins the round.
A game lasts approximately 15 to 20 minutes, allowing for quick, infinitely replayable sequences.
Our Tips for Winning
-
Be precise but creative
A good clue should evoke several words without being too obvious. Avoid direct associations and prefer metaphors or lexical fields.
-
Analyze your teammates' logic
Each player thinks differently. Observe your team's reactions and habits to better anticipate their associations.
-
Watch out for adverse words
Some words on the board belong to the opposing team: avoid alluding to them and direct your clues in another direction.
